ABCD Head Start & Children’s Services joined Smart from the Start at the Michael T. Carmen Center in Roxbury for a gathering of Boston families to learn about incorporating physical exercise into family fun time. The gymnasium at Smart from the Start was utilized for all kinds of activities. Painter’s Tape was used to make lines across the floor with the challenge of “walking a tight rope” or jumping to squares. Children practiced crawling, tiptoeing, crab-walking, jumping, and stepping forward, backward, and sideways. Wax paper and paper plates were creatively used for some indoor “ice skating.” Children really enjoyed using cardboard boxes for building and designing mazes. Families learned about how these physical activities help burn energy and increase large muscle strength and coordination. They also promote school readiness skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and hand-eye coordination.
