Smart Family & Friends,
Every child should be born with the promise of a tomorrow filled with wonder, freedom of spirit and the opportunity to achieve their greatest potential with no limitations, fears or shackles, whether physical or societal.
Yet in the United States of America that is not the reality.The reality for those born with black or brown skin is that:
Driving while Black;
Jogging while Black;
Shopping while Black;
Walking while Black;
Schooling while Black;
Playing while Black;
Breathing while Black;
Living while Black – just LIVING while Black – can literally cost you your very life.
George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and countless, often nameless others have been murdered in America because they were living while Black.
Speaking as a Black woman in America,
I. Can’t. Breathe.
Coretta Scott King once told us that, “Struggle is a never ending process. Freedom is never really won. You earn it and win it in every generation.”
Smart from the Start, our families and communities are ready to stand and fight shoulder to shoulder with those who believe that the Promise of America is one that must be enjoyed equally by all, regardless of what they look like, where they live or who their parents are. Since our inception, Smart has been embedded in the communities most greatly impacted. We have been and will remain on the front lines fighting for equality and justice. In response to this renewed movement for civil rights, Smart is forming new alliances and creating additional programs and initiatives. We will continue to train, support, and uplift the voices of new community leaders in order to ensure a better future for our children.
It is time to get to work to ensure that the Promise of America is a reality for all, and we will not let up “until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.”– The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
