One of Smart’s most significant accomplishments is our recent expansion from our 3 pilot communities of Charlestown, Mattapan and Roslindale to include the neighborhoods of Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, Lower Roxbury and now the South End – for a total of 16 sites in 7 Smart from the Start communities across the City of Boston.
We are honored to have been welcomed into our new neighborhoods by residents, stakeholders and agency partners, with whom we meet and talk before we launch programming. Our outreach staff works in concert with our team of community friends and advisers to reach out to families in need of services. We engage in door knocking, community canvassing and meeting families at T stations, tot-lots, barbershops, laundromats and other places in communities where families frequent.
We are very proud of the work we have done in partnership with our families and partners to bring new life to our new citywide site, the Thomas Johnson Community Center in Roxbury. We were pleased to have been given the opportunity to take over programming at the Center by our friends at BCYF, and have served thousands of families in Smart from the Start programming and special events since the center re-opened in January 2011. We are looking forward to continuing to building on our early successes by increasing the number of programs offered and families served in the coming year!
